Become a Sunday Letter-Keeper for the project

The Sunday Letter Project is a weekly invitation to slow down and reconnect through handwritten letters. Participants take a simple pledge to write, reflect, and savour time away from screens - every single Sunday.

Following popular demand online, we are so excited to have started our Sunday Letter-Keeper Network for independent shops and cafes, that will let people find a pen pal from within the project and exchange letters safely through participating shops, without sharing personal addresses. Every shop acts as a trusted poste-restante point — holding letters that travel across towns and countries, connecting hearts and minds.

By joining, your shop helps keep the art of letter writing alive and creates a meaningful reason for people to visit again and again. We also hope that it will help encourage footfall from thoughtful customers, who will want to support independent shops and cafes. You also have the option to sell Sunday Letter Project letter paper on a wholesale basis.

The project has reached over 400,000 views and 34,000 likes on social media this week, with over 2000 comments full of people who are really keen to join the project and find a pen pal. We have also had some really encouraging media interest. We really think this is something that people are craving and are so excited about you joining us on our letter-writing, pen-pal mission.

How does it work?

  • As a Letter-Keeper shop, you’ll create a small Letter Corner — a small space where customers can learn about The Sunday Letter Project.

    What to include:

    • Your Sunday Letter Project poster, displayed nearby to explain the movement.

    • A Letter Holder basket (please choose your own)

    • If space allows, you may want to include a small table or writing surface with pens, envelopes, and a few sheets of writing paper.

    The Intro Letter Basket

Each Letter Holder shop can keep a small basket or box of “intro letters.” These are letters written by people who’d like to find a pen pal through The Sunday Letter Project.

Once on the network, your shop may receive an intro letter — a friendly note from someone introducing themselves, what they enjoy writing about, or what kind of correspondence they’d like, with a shop return address on the envelope.

We recommend adding these, unsealed, in the basket for others to browse.

Your visitors can choose one that speaks to them, take it home, and reply through the Letter-Keeper Network.

The connection continues through the shops, safely and privately, without sharing home addresses. This creates a gentle, analogue way for people to find pen pals — right there in your  shop. It invites conversation, curiosity, and community.

    Local Post

You may also want to include an area for local post, to facilitate the free-exchange of letters between local pen-pals - something which we believe could be a lifeline for the elderly or those who cannot afford the cost of postage. We are happy to connect you to your closest care home to facilitate the sending of letters to your local care-home, a brilliant community-building initiative which we think will be just as lovely for the sender as the recipient.

  • Stationery, book, and gift shops

    Cafes with a writing corner

    Galleries and community spaces

    •  It will hopefully bring people in more regularly through your doors

    • It allows you to share something on social media that is gaining traction fast but doesn't feel ‘too salesy’

    • We hope it will build community and kindness - locally and globally

    • It creates a weekly ritual customers will hopefully talk about.

    • You are welcome to monetise the service as you see fit, with a membership or one-time fee for letter-keeping

  • 1. Choose your Starter Pack below

    2. We add you to the directory map

    3. You set up your Letter Corner

    4. You start holding letters and sharing the idea with your community

If you have any questions, please do send us an email and we will help as quickly as we can.

If you are a non-profit, please drop us a few lines about why you think we should include you in the network and we will consider subsidising or covering the payment for the digital pack.

Your one time fee will go towards spreading the word about the project and hopefully, eventually drive more people to your premises.

Once you have joined the project, we will also send you a dropbox file of shareable, digital information about the project as well as statistics and quotes from people who are taking part.
